SHOWCASE EXHIBITION 2

ABSTRACTION WITH MELANIE

I chose to begin 2026 by taking an online Monday morning class with Melanie Delgado. With a focus on process, this has offered me a refreshing way to start each week. And after our long winter months, the shift out of my comfort zone has truly felt invigorating. In this particular piece, using a pallete knife helped loosen up my mark-making and resulted in a great deal of earthy texture. And I’m excited to see where it takes me next…

SHE’S LIKE THE WIND

14” x 14” framed / powdered graphite, pencil, on yupo / ©Roxie Johnson 2025

This current drawing series personifies my fascination with those relationships lying beyond one’s ordinary field of awareness. And I feel privileged to have a selection of them on display and available at PINKWATER GALLERY, 237 Fair Street, Kingston, NY.

I invite you to get a close up, nose-to-nose experience with my recent work through January 6th, 2026.

I love utilizing a diverse collection of mark-making implements when working with graphite. This particular Patterson-Sargent brush occupies a special place in my studio practice. The bristle is from Chinese horsehair and is crafted to be used in varnishing furniture. Salvaged from my late father’s basement workbench, it has become a remarkable applicator for using powdered graphite in  recent work. With repetitive layering as part of my genetic makeup, the method is perfect for producing an intriguing dimensional ground for whatever else might materialize.

I often imagine what my Dad might have accomplished with this brush years ago. He was a statistician, a teacher, a violinist, with a passion for woodwork and fine craft. Though a complicated man, he lived a simple life, and I’m unsure how many actually experienced his quieter, pensive, and more creative side. What I do know is that when taking his brush in hand, I sense an inescapable familiarity washing over me. I’ll crack a thin smile, sink down into the moment, feeling blessed for the comfort we had each managed to find in doing something we loved.
